The basic foundation of a person’s future well-being lies in early childhood. In recognition of this and within the context of Good Shepherd Lutheran College, the Prep program offers both an educational learning environment and a caring community. Prep is a 5 day a week program. The day begins at 8.35am and ends at 2.45pm.
Education Queensland recommends 15 hours of aide time per week in Prep. At Good Shepherd, we are committed to providing full assistance for teachers and to maintaining extensive duty of care considerations. It is for this reason that we employ two full-time teacher aides for Prep. This means one quality aide per class at all times.
Our Prep program identifies 5 key aspects of development. They are:
Spiritual - Help children foster a sense of self and his/her sense of God.
Physical - Help children to increase their large and small muscle skills and feel confident about what their bodies can do.
Social - Help children feel comfortable in and trust their new environment, make friends, and feel they are part of a group.
Emotional - Help children experience pride and self-confidence, develop independence and self control, and have a positive attitude toward life.
Intellectual - Help children become confident learners by encouraging them to try out their own ideas and to experience success. Note: children at this age learn best by doing and so within these five key aspects of development “hands on” activities will be a priority.
Co-Curricular Activities in Prep
The children will be involved in a wide variety of whole school activities throughout the year. Some of these include: · Concerts · Grandparent’s Day · Special Church Services · Sports Day · School Fete (Shepherd’s Fair)
A benefit of being part of our Junior Years section is that children in Prep are able to participate in the following activities, with assistance of a specialist teacher in some areas. These include: · Music · Sport · Japanese · Library · Computing · Assembly and Chapel participation
The children also attend some enjoyable and valuable excursions throughout the year. These co-curricular activities play a major role in preparing the children for school life after Prep.
